Knee fellowship Report

I started my fellowship in 2008 and had the honour of being the 50th fellow of the Knee Foundation. The Droitwich Knee clinic receives referrals from all over United Kingdom, most of which are seen very early.

During my fellowship I gained experience in Arthroplasty including Uni and Total knee replacements, Cartilage reconstruction procedures and osteotomies. I got the chance to review the patients in the out-patient department and discuss interesting knee related problems.   Morning and evening ward rounds were part of the daily routine. Once a month I helped organise Clinical Meetings where interesting knee related problems and cases were discussed with fellow consultants.  I also took part in monthly journal clubs, where we discussed interesting knee related papers from peer reviewed journals. I found both to be very informative and educational.

The Knee Foundation organises numerous courses and meetings which I relished to be the part of.  I was also involved in research activities and audits.  I presented the last eight year audit on anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and last year arthroplasty audit, the results of which are very promising.

My research projects were.

1. Long-term results of arthroscopic lateral retinacular release for advanced patellofemoral joint arthritis: Accepted for podium presentation at EFORT conference in Vienna 2009

2. Early results of High Tibial Osteotomy using monolateral external fixator, combined with microfracture for medial compartment osteoarthritis of knee: Accepted for presentation at ICRS – the 8th World Congress of the International Cartilage Repair Society, Miami, Florida 2009.

3. Pridie Drilling for Osteonecrotic fragment of the Knee. Results are being analyzed.

4. Destruction of Lateral facet of patella secondary to interference screw post ACL reconstruction. Draft being finalised for publication.

In the course of my tenure, I gained profound skills especially in Arthroscopic procedures. Before I joined the fellowship program I could do arthroscopic procedures individually but the technique I have learnt from this fellowship has made these procedures very simple to perform. Although there is little cutting experience, you do get the opportunity to assist all osseous and soft tissue techniques and procedures related to knee.

The staff are very helpful and the consultants, very supportive.

I thoroughly recommend to any young and upcoming orthopaedic surgeon to try and be part of this Fellowship, which has given me an opportunity to improve my knowledge and surgical approaches.   I am thankful to the Department for the overwhelming reception and hospitality I received throughout the entire Fellowship, and I am full of appreciation to the Knee Foundation for providing me with this great opportunity.
